Laziness is a killer!

The BBC has reported today that "95% of the UK population are not even doing the minimum recommended amounts of physical activity to confer even basic health benefits (30 minutes' moderate to vigorous physical activity on at least five days a week - or the equivalent).
Whether slim or fat, a person leading a sedentary lifestyle has similar chances of dying young to a smoker."
Time to get up and act!

"Low levels of vitamin B12 linked to Alzheimer's" - New Scientist

The New Scientist reported today that "people with low levels of vitamin B12 may be at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The finding supports previous research showing large doses of B vitamins might halve the rate of brain shrinkage."

"Although B12 deficiency is common among elderly people, more evidence is needed before recommending B12 supplements to stave off dementia, says Hooshmand".

"Changes caused by smoking block tumour-fighting genes" - New Scientist

The New Scientist reported today that "the first direct evidence has been found linking smoking to epigenetic changes in genes that help fight cancer. Reversing these changes may one day provide a new route to treating cancer.

Women with cervical cancer are known to have higher levels of epigenetic modifications – methyl groups attached to particular sites on their DNA – affecting a gene called p16, which is known to be involved in suppressing tumours.

To find out more, Yuk Ting Ma at the University of Birmingham, UK, re-analysed samples from a series of cervical smear tests taken over four years from 1075 women. Ma found evidence of p16 methylation in the cervical cells of 37 per cent of smokers compared to 9.3 per cent of non-smokers. Women who started smoking during the study were 3.7 times more likely to acquire p16 methylation than non-smokers.
In two-thirds of the 19 smokers with p16 methylation who gave up smoking during the trial, the methylation disappeared. This suggests not only that smoking caused the changes, but also that it might be possible to reverse them before they lead to cancer."

Limited Sleep May Affect Body Fat Loss - say Better Health research

Better Health Research have reported that not getting enough sleep may prevent optimal weight loss results, according to findings published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

"Over the course of one month, a total of 10 people aged 35 to 49 who were considered obese followed a low-caloric diet. Researchers then had participants follow two different sleep regimens for two weeks – eight and a half hours and five and a half hours."

"The results of the study showed that throughout the first phase, individuals lost more than 3 pounds of body fat. However, when their sleep was restricted, they only lost approximately 1 pound of body fat."

"Thighs and abs have a different take on fat" - New Scientist

The New Scientist reports that fat stored on different parts of the body has diffferent health effects and significance:

"As many women will no doubt attest, not all fat accrues equally. That may be because cells in your thighs and abdomen store fat in different ways."

"Michael Jensen and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, put volunteers on a fattening diet for eight weeks and then measured what happened to their fat cells, or adipocytes. While abdominal cells got larger, thigh cells multiplied, by recruiting more adipocytes from pre-fat cells. The more new thigh fat cells recruited, the less abdominal fat people gained."

"Fat on the abdomen increases the risk of diabetes and other disorders, while fat on hips and thighs has a protective effect. Jensen thinks thigh fat may soak up excess food energy to keep it away from the abdomen, where fat does more damage."

Driving 'could damage health' - Sun Article

An article in The Sun today revealed that driving could damage health.

"MOTORISTS face hidden long-term mental health problems, research suggested today.
Dr David Lewis, the psychologist credited with coining the phrase "road rage", warned stresses such as congestion and delays can raise blood pressure and lead to more serious issues further down the line.
However, travelling by bus could reduce mental stress by up to a third and produce long-term health benefits, he said. "

"The findings revealed average stress levels were 33 per cent lower on bus journeys..... Some 93 per cent said they found driving more stressful."
